Home Our Calendar Motion and Forces Unit Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5
Day 5
  Ms. Terry Orr

Lesson: 3rd Law of Motion:
Unit: Motion and Forces
Grade Level: 6th
Estimated time requirement: 1-50 minute class period.

Summary: Students have been introduced to motion and ways of describing changing motion. This lesson will deal with Newton's Third Law of Motion. According to the third law, forces always act in pairs; the action force and the reaction force. Students know the law as: for every action force, there is a reaction force that is equal in size but in the opposite direction.

Objectives: Using Newton's law of motion, analyze and demonstrate the third law.

TEKS:
6:1 The student conducts field and lab investigations using safe and ethical practices.
6:1A Demonstrate safe practices during lab investigations.
6:2B Collect data by observing and measuring.
6:2C Analyze and interpret information to construct reasonable explanations from direct and indirect evidence.
6:2D Communicate valid conclusions.
6:3 The student uses critical thinking and scientific problem solving to make informed decisions.
6:3A Analyze, review, and critique scientific explanations, including hypotheses and theories, as to their strengths and weaknesses using scientific evidence and information.
6:3E Connect Grade 6 science concepts with the history of science and contributions of scientists.
6:4A Collect, analyze, and record information using tools including timing devices, calculators, computers, and probes.
6:6 The student knows that thereis a relationship between force and motion.
6:6A Identify and describe the changes in position, direction of motion, and speed of an object when acted upon by a force.
6:6B Demonstrate that changes in motion can be measured and graphically represented.

Assessment:Students will be able to answer teacher related questions about the chapter reading, correctly filling in notes from the lesson, be able to correctly identify which law of motion is being demonstrated, completion of lab activity and answer document.

Materials: Textbook (Glencoe Texas Science), computer with downloaded video clips, TV, CBR units, TI 73 calculator, balloons, fishing line.

Resources: Glencoe Texas Science grade 6, Probeware Labs Activity Booklet, Digitalcurriculum.com for video clips.
